Water edge restoration

As part of any de-silting project, we will make a full assessment of the water edges and recommend restoration work if required.

Erosion happens naturally on riverbanks and canalsides as well as ponds and lakes, but over time embankments and edges can become dangerous and need restoring. It can also become an environmental issue.

Bio-engineering

Using natural products, such as coir rolls, we can restore the strength and look of the river or canal bank. Over time, vegetation roots down into the rolls and creates a natural edge where birds can nest. Coir is stable and environmentally friendly.

For some restoration work, oak and softwood edging are both hardwearing and aesthetically pleasing.

Stone edging

We can restore edging using stone kerbs and ‘rip rap’, which are randomly placed stones that create a traditional and visually pleasing effect.

Hard engineering

If hard engineering is needed, we will choose sheetpiling or gabions for strength and stability, but we’ll always aim to combine them with natural products that meet environmental standards and accommodate vegetation.

Water edge restoration can be achieved from the water using a floating pontoon if there is little or no plant access from the bank. All restoration work is carefully designed to fit in with the environment and to last.

As part of any canal dredging project, we are also able to offer towpath restoration and construction.
